Southern Right Whale watching in Peninsula Valdés

Península Valdés: Natural World Heritage. It combines beautiful landscapes and extraordinary flora and fauna.

After your arrival at Trelew’s airport you will be transferred to the hotel in Puerto Madryn City, a tourist spot located at 67 km north from Trelew. This is where the southern right whales inhabit. We will tour around the city, its coast, its residential area, the “indio Tehuelche” monument, the Patagonia University and the waterfront avenue. Panoramic view of the city and the gulf, and late visit to the Eco-center dedicated to the marine ecosystems.

When the tour is over we will enjoy a magnificent dinner at “El Escondido”, a classic restaurant in the city with cozy and relaxed surroundings. The young chef Mariano Ameri presents careful versions of a cuisine that mingles Patagonian and Mediterranean flavors. Every night, Ameri proposes its outstanding dishes with varieties that include fresh fish, homemade pasta and regional specialties. After a traditional snack, we will taste the lamb roll with Malbec sauce and herbs, served with squashes au gratin. We will also have some chicken breast with citric sauce. For those who prefer fish, they may choose the pollack in white wine and green onion sauce, or pejerrey au gratin with rice timbale.

At the end of this day, you will be transferred to the hotel you have chosen.

It is an exceptional spectacle. This is a good chance of seeing some wild animals such as killer whales, dolphins, sea lions, elephant seals, penguins, cormorants, guanacos, Patagonian hare, grey foxes, Patagonian piche or armadillos. We will depart from Puerto Madryn discovering the Center of Interpretation Isthmus Carlos Ameghino where we will be handed all type of information about flora, fauna and history of the region.

Five kilometers away from here, we will see the Island of the Birds very important for the large amount of marine birds that inhabit it. We will get to Port Piramides where we will do whale watching (from June to December), and witness elephant seals and dolphins (all year long) embarked on a semi-rigid boat. We will have lunch at a local typical restaurant. We can stop at Punta Piramide, a reserve where, between December and March, the elephant seals are in their mating and breeding season.

We will depart from Port Piramide going through Salina Grande and Salina Chica Salt Fields. We will arrive at Punta Delgada’s Lighthouse from 1905 and we will see elephant seals. After some kilometers we will get to Caleta Valdés. There we find another sightseeing spot from where we can see a Magellan Penguins’ colony. Between October and March when we visit Punta Norte, we will be able to see sea lions and elephant seals, and possibly some killer whales. We will then take our way back to Puerto Madryn. We will have dinner at El Nautico, a classic among the classics this restaurant is located at the top of the list of favorite seaside resorts. Ariel and Ángel Bordenave –father and son– open the doors of one of the best known gastronomical spots in Puerto Madryn. The unbeatable quality of its products, the expertise of its cooks and the coherence of a cuisine essentially from the sea justify the attained success.

We will leave after breakfast, early in the morning to visit Punta Tombo Penguin Colony, one of the greatest in the world. This Natural Reserve is something you cannot leave behind, there is no other penguin colony as big as this one and in which visitors can mingle with its inhabitants. You will be amazed watching the penguins waddle around searching for their nests or running after their pigeons.

During our way back, we will visit the typical welsh chapels in the Town of Gaiman. At this colony we will be able to taste a great Welsh tea and the famous Welsh pastry. With a wooded landscape, its wild fences, the eroded cliffs, this little town invites us to make a tour around its streets and be acquainted with its history. We will visit the Historic and Regional Welsh Museum housed at the old train station, holding the belongings and photographs of the Gaiman pioneers, the first house built in 1874, the tunnel and the old chapels. We can then enjoy a delicious Welsh tea prepared with ancient recipes offering a unique flavor and scent. You will be able to taste the well known Welsh pastry as well as homemade confitures. At the end of the day, we will return to Puerto Madryn to have dinner and a deserved rest.
